Home Renovation and Home Building Trends 2014

2/12/2014

With the 2014 BC Home + Gardens Show quickly approaching, we wanted to give you a preview of some of the the trends (new and continuing) that you will be seeing at the show when it comes to renovations and custom home building. Hopefully this gives you some ideas and inspiration for your custom build or home renovation.

Healthy Homes

We can finally say that designing a healthy home is no longer a trend, but an important philosophy and practice that our entire industry is adopting. We are increasingly aware of the ways that the health of our families is impacted by synthetic and chemical additives in building materials – However, we are now finding many more natural alternatives for glues, paints and wood products that you would feel safe and comfortable surrounding your family with.

Sustainable Design

It is very exciting to see sustainable renovations and home building to evolve from just a trend, into a true driving force within our industry. Marcraft Homes is constantly meeting with architects and engineers to see how we can incorporate more natural materials, integrate more modern building techniques to build and renovate homes that are not only efficient and low impact after the fact, but have a low environmental footprint throughout the entire building/renovation process.

Adaptive Use of Existing Structures

Something that is exciting from a design perspective and will play a very prevalent role in low-rise and smaller developments within the “city” are how we preserve historic architecture and repurpose or re-use older structures.

Marcraft Homes is an absolute renovation expert when it comes to updating heritage homes in Vancouver and we think that some of the most unique and awe-inspiring homes in the near future will be constructed from the shell of old commercial buildings and warehouses and possibly even abandoned structures like churches.

Versatile Designs

Changing lifestyles calls for changing living spaces. Across the board, when it comes to award winning home design and building you are seeing more flexibility in living arrangements – including dedicated rooms being replaced by large multi-purpose family areas and integration of “flex” areas throughout a home that can be used for a variety of specialized or focused spaces. Architects often use the phrase “universal design” to describe homes that are comfortable and blend special features seamlessly into the overall design and build of a home.

Outdoor Rooms

Outdoor rooms, are definitely not a new trend, but in 2014 it will be taken to an all new level. Outdoor spaces are now playing an integral role in maximizing smaller homes as well as condos and lofts in the city. A home’s floor plan now extends to outdoor cooking and food prep spaces, extensions of living and family areas with full wall sliding glass doors, sophisticated creature comforts and integrated home technology and entertainment.

Integrated Storage

Something we are seeing with many of our major renovation projects of older and heritage homes in Vancouver, is the desire to keep a few major existing elements and integrating them into new designs. The challenge being that these elements are usually eating up a lot of valuable space. This is where home builders and renovation companies are blending the old with the new and integrating enormous and spacious walk-in closets, storage areas, functional and well integrated built-ins and unique flex spaces that take advantage of making 3,000 square feet feel like 6,000.
