The ability to communicate well, like trust, does take time, but you can tell a lot about a contractor by their ability to understand what it is you are envisioning as well as draw upon their experience to explain why something may not work well, even though it looks great in your head.
Many builders have relationships with translators as well, so if you are more comfortable communicating in Mandarin, Punjabi or Farsi – do not hesitate to ask if they can bring a translator along.
Most importantly – make sure they are able to actually listen to what you want, instead of trying to ideas onto you that you do not like.
